[1131] "Venerable sir, this statement was spoken by the Blessed One: 'I shall not attain final Nibbāna (parinibbāna), Evil One, so long as my male lay followers … so long as my female lay followers have not become disciples who are competent, disciplined, confident, learned, bearers of the Dhamma, practising in accordance with the Dhamma, practising properly, conducting themselves in accordance with the Dhamma; who, having learned their own teacher's doctrine, will declare it, teach it, make it known, establish it, disclose it, analyse it, and elucidate it; and who, having thoroughly refuted with legitimate reasons (sahadhammena) the doctrines of others that have arisen, will teach the Dhamma with its wonders (sappāṭihāriya).' But now, venerable sir, there are female lay followers who are disciples of the Blessed One — competent, disciplined, confident, learned, bearers of the Dhamma, practising in accordance with the Dhamma, practising properly, conducting themselves in accordance with the Dhamma; who, having learned their own teacher's doctrine, declare it, teach it, make it known, establish it, disclose it, analyse it, and elucidate it; and who, having thoroughly refuted with legitimate reasons the doctrines of others that have arisen, teach the Dhamma with its wonders. May the Blessed One now attain final Nibbāna, venerable sir; may the Sublime One (Sugata) attain final Nibbāna. Now, venerable sir, is the time for the Blessed One's final Nibbāna."
