[116] And what, bhikkhus, is the goal of the holy life (brahmacariya)? That, bhikkhus, which is the destruction of lust (rāga), the destruction of hatred, the destruction of delusion — this, bhikkhus, is called the goal of the holy life.
The Fourth Chapter: On Practice (Paṭipattivagga).
Its summary verse (uddāna):
Practice, and one who is practising,
gone astray, and going to the far shore;
two spoken by way of asceticism,
two others on the state of a brahmin;
two spoken by way of the holy life —
thus is the chapter recited.
