[1412] Bhikkhus, although a noble disciple sustains himself on lumps of almsfood and wears even cast-off rags, yet he is endowed with four things; and thus he is freed from hell, freed from the animal realm, freed from the realm of ghosts, freed from the plane of misery, the bad destination, the downfall. What four? Here, bhikkhus, a noble disciple is endowed with confirmed confidence (aveccappasāda) in the Buddha thus: "Indeed, that Blessed One is an arahant, perfectly enlightened by himself, accomplished in true knowledge (vijjā) and conduct, well-gone, knower of the world, unsurpassed trainer of persons to be tamed, teacher of gods and humans, enlightened, blessed." He is endowed with confirmed confidence in the Dhamma thus: "The Dhamma is well proclaimed by the Blessed One, directly visible, not subject to time, inviting one to come and see, worthy of application, to be personally experienced by the wise." He is endowed with confirmed confidence in the Saṅgha thus: "The Saṅgha of the Blessed One's disciples is practicing well, the Saṅgha of the Blessed One's disciples is practicing uprightly, the Saṅgha of the Blessed One's disciples is practicing the true way, the Saṅgha of the Blessed One's disciples is practicing properly; that is, the four pairs of persons, the eight individuals — this Saṅgha of the Blessed One's disciples is worthy of gifts, worthy of hospitality, worthy of offerings, worthy of reverential salutation, the unsurpassed field of merit for the world." He is endowed with the virtues dear to the noble ones — unbroken, untorn, unblemished, unmottled, freeing, praised by the wise, ungrasped, leading to concentration (samādhi). He is endowed with these four things.
