[1791] Bhikkhus, just so, few are those beings who abstain from mutilation, killing, binding, robbery with violence, plunder, and acts of coercion; rather, far more numerous are those beings who do not abstain from mutilation, killing, binding, robbery with violence, plunder, and acts of coercion. For what reason? Because, bhikkhus, of not having seen the four noble truths (ariyasacca). Which four? The noble truth of suffering (dukkha) … the noble truth of the way of practice leading to the cessation (nirodha) of suffering. Therefore, bhikkhus, effort should be made [to realize]: 'This is suffering' … effort should be made [to realize]: 'This is the way of practice leading to the cessation of suffering.'
