[339] Setting at Sāvatthī. Bhikkhus, there are these four knots (gantha). What four? The bodily knot (kāyagantha) of covetousness (abhijjhā), the bodily knot of ill will (byāpāda), the bodily knot of wrong grasp of rules and observances (sīlabbataparāmāsa), and the bodily knot of adherence to the dogma "this alone is truth" (idaṃsaccābhinivesa). These, bhikkhus, are the four knots.
