[383] On one occasion the Venerable Sāriputta was dwelling at Sāvatthī, in Jeta's Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika's Park. There the Venerable Sāriputta addressed the bhikkhus: "Friends, bhikkhus!"
"Friend!" [1] those bhikkhus replied to the Venerable Sāriputta. The Venerable Sāriputta said this:
"Friends, there are these seven factors of awakening (bojjhaṅga). What seven? The awakening factor of mindfulness (sati), the awakening factor of investigation of dhammas (dhammavicaya), the awakening factor of energy (vīriya), the awakening factor of rapture (pīti), the awakening factor of tranquility (passaddhi), the awakening factor of concentration (samādhi), and the awakening factor of equanimity (upekkhā). These, friends, are the seven factors of awakening."
