[421] Then the Blessed One, having emerged from seclusion in the evening, approached the Venerable Mahāmoggallāna; having approached, he sat down on the seat that had been prepared. Having sat down, the Blessed One said this to the Venerable Mahāmoggallāna: "Moggallāna, are you bearing up? Are you getting along? Are your painful feelings (vedanā) subsiding and not increasing? Is their subsiding, not their increasing, discerned?"
"Venerable sir, I am not bearing up, I am not getting along. Severe painful feelings are increasing in me, not subsiding. Their increasing, not their subsiding, is discerned."
