[454] When this was said, the Venerable Udāyi said to the Blessed One: "Venerable sir, how are the seven factors of awakening (bojjhaṅga) developed, how are they cultivated, so that they lead to penetration (nibbedha)?"
"Here, Udāyi, a bhikkhu develops the awakening factor of mindfulness (sati), based upon seclusion (viveka), based upon dispassion (virāga), based upon cessation (nirodha) — vast, exalted, measureless, free from affliction. With a mind (citta) developed by the awakening factor of mindfulness, he pierces and breaks apart the mass of greed (lobha) never pierced before, never broken apart before; he pierces and breaks apart the mass of hatred (dosa) never pierced before, never broken apart before; he pierces and breaks apart the mass of delusion (moha) never pierced before, never broken apart before. … He develops the awakening factor of equanimity (upekkhā), based upon seclusion, based upon dispassion, based upon cessation — vast, exalted, measureless, free from affliction. With a mind developed by the awakening factor of equanimity, he pierces and breaks apart the mass of greed never pierced before, never broken apart before; he pierces and breaks apart the mass of hatred never pierced before, never broken apart before; he pierces and breaks apart the mass of delusion never pierced before, never broken apart before. It is when the seven factors of awakening are developed in this way, Udāyi, cultivated in this way, that they lead to penetration."
