[58] The setting is at Pāṭaliputta.
"Friend Ānanda, it is said: 'the holy life (brahmacariya), the holy life.' What now, friend, is the holy life? Who is one who lives the holy life? And what is the consummation of the holy life?"
"Good, good, friend Bhadda! Excellent, friend Bhadda, is your acumen (ummaṅga), excellent your intelligence, good your inquiry. For thus, friend Bhadda, you ask: 'Friend Ānanda, it is said: "the holy life, the holy life." What now, friend, is the holy life? Who is one who lives the holy life? And what is the consummation of the holy life?'"
"Yes, friend."
"It is just this Noble Eightfold Path, friend, that is the holy life; that is: right view … right concentration (samādhi). One who possesses this Noble Eightfold Path, friend, is called one who lives the holy life. The destruction of lust (rāga), the destruction of hatred, the destruction of delusion — this, friend, is the consummation of the holy life."
The three suttas have one and the same setting.
The Second Chapter: the Chapter on Dwellings (Vihāravagga).
Its summary verse (uddāna):
Two on dwellings, and the trainee; two others on arising;
two spoken with "purified"; three with the Kukkuṭārāma.
