[596] "Bhikkhus, wanderers of other sects who speak thus should be told: 'Friends, how, then, is the liberation of mind (cetovimutti) by loving-kindness developed? What is its destination, what is its culmination, what is its fruit, what is its final goal? How, friends, is the liberation of mind by compassion developed? What is its destination, what is its culmination, what is its fruit, what is its final goal? How, friends, is the liberation of mind by altruistic joy developed? What is its destination, what is its culmination, what is its fruit, what is its final goal? How, friends, is the liberation of mind by equanimity developed? What is its destination, what is its culmination, what is its fruit, what is its final goal?' Bhikkhus, when they are asked thus, the wanderers of other sects will not be able to explain, and further they will fall into vexation. For what reason? Because, bhikkhus, that lies outside their domain. Bhikkhus, I do not see anyone in this world with its devas, with Māra, with Brahmā, in this generation with its ascetics and brahmins, its devas and humans, who could satisfy the mind (citta) with an answer to these questions, except the Tathāgata, or a disciple of the Tathāgata, or one who has heard it from here."
