[599] "And how, bhikkhus, is the liberation of mind through altruistic joy (muditācetovimutti) developed? What is its destination, what its culmination, what its fruit, what its final end? Here, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu develops the mindfulness factor of awakening (bojjhaṅga) accompanied by altruistic joy … he develops the equanimity factor of awakening accompanied by altruistic joy, based upon seclusion (viveka), based upon dispassion (virāga), based upon cessation, maturing in relinquishment (vossagga). If he wishes: 'May I dwell perceiving the repulsive in the unrepulsive,' he dwells perceiving the repulsive therein … If he wishes: 'Avoiding both the unrepulsive and the repulsive, may I dwell equanimous, mindful and clearly comprehending,' he dwells therein equanimous, mindful and clearly comprehending. Or else, by completely transcending the base of the infinity of space (ākāsānañcāyatana), [aware that] 'consciousness is infinite,' he enters upon and dwells in the base of the infinity of consciousness (viññāṇañcāyatana). Bhikkhus, I declare that the liberation of mind through altruistic joy has the base of the infinity of consciousness as its culmination — for a bhikkhu of wisdom here who has not penetrated to a higher liberation."
