[642] Setting at Sāvatthī. Bhikkhus, when the perception of a skeleton (aṭṭhikasaññā) has been developed and cultivated, one of two fruits is to be expected: either final knowledge (aññā) in this very life or, if there is a residue of clinging (upādisesa), the state of non-returning (anāgāmitā). And how, bhikkhus, when the perception of a skeleton has been developed, how when it has been cultivated, is one of two fruits to be expected: either final knowledge in this very life or, if there is a residue of clinging, the state of non-returning? Here, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu develops the mindfulness factor of awakening (bojjhaṅga) accompanied by the perception of a skeleton … he develops the equanimity factor of awakening dependent on seclusion, dependent on dispassion, dependent on cessation, maturing in release. It is when the perception of a skeleton has been developed in this way, bhikkhus, cultivated in this way, that one of two fruits is to be expected: either final knowledge in this very life or, if there is a residue of clinging, the state of non-returning.
