[705] Just so, bhikkhus, here a certain foolish, incompetent, unskilled bhikkhu dwells contemplating the body in the body, ardent, clearly comprehending, mindful, having removed covetousness and grief regarding the world. As he dwells contemplating the body in the body, his mind (citta) does not become concentrated, the corruptions (upakkilesa) are not abandoned; he does not pick up that sign (nimitta). He dwells contemplating feelings (vedanā) in feelings … the mind in the mind … dhammas in dhammas, ardent, clearly comprehending, mindful, having removed covetousness and grief regarding the world. As he dwells contemplating dhammas in dhammas, his mind does not become concentrated, the corruptions are not abandoned; he does not pick up that sign. That foolish, incompetent, unskilled bhikkhu, bhikkhus, is not one who gains pleasant dwellings in this very life, nor is he one who gains mindfulness and clear comprehension. For what reason? Because, bhikkhus, that foolish, incompetent, unskilled bhikkhu does not pick up the sign of his own mind.
