[708] Thus have I heard. On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling at Vesālī, in the village of Veluva (Veluvagāmaka). There the Blessed One addressed the bhikkhus: "Come, bhikkhus, enter upon the rains residence (vassa) all around Vesālī, wherever you have friends, wherever you have acquaintances, wherever you have intimates. I myself will enter upon the rains residence right here in the village of Veluva."
"Yes, venerable sir," those bhikkhus replied to the Blessed One, and they entered upon the rains residence all around Vesālī, wherever they had friends, wherever they had acquaintances, wherever they had intimates.
