Sedakasutta

[761] And how, bhikkhus, does one who protects others protect himself? By patience (khanti), by non-harming (avihiṃsā), by a mind of loving-kindness (mettacittatā), by sympathy (anudayatā). It is in this way, bhikkhus, that one who protects others protects himself.
