[113] At that time the Buddha, the Blessed One, was dwelling at Sāvatthī, in Jeta's Grove, in Anāthapiṇḍika's park. Now at that time the Venerable Upananda the Sakyan was skilled at making robes (cīvarakamma). Having made an outer robe (saṅghāṭi) out of cloth rags, having dyed it well and finished it well, he wore it.
Then a certain wanderer (paribbājaka), wearing a costly cloth, approached the Venerable Upananda the Sakyan; and having approached, he said this to the Venerable Upananda the Sakyan: "Beautiful indeed, friend, is this outer robe of yours; give it to me in exchange for my cloth."
"Know what you are doing, friend."
"Yes, friend, I know."
"Here then, friend," he said, and gave it.
Then that wanderer, wearing that outer robe, went to the wanderers' park. The wanderers said this to that wanderer: "Beautiful indeed, friend, is this outer robe of yours. Where did you get it?"
"I exchanged it, friends, for that cloth of mine."
"For how many days, friend, will this outer robe last you? That cloth of yours was itself the better."
Then that wanderer, thinking, "Truly did the wanderers speak: for how many days will this outer robe last me? That cloth of mine was itself the better," approached the Venerable Upananda the Sakyan; and having approached, he said this to the Venerable Upananda the Sakyan: "Here, friend, is your outer robe; give me my cloth."
"Did I not say to you, friend, 'Know what you are doing, friend'? I will not give it."
Then that wanderer criticized, complained, and spread it about: "Even a householder gives back to a householder who regrets; will one gone forth not give back to one gone forth?"
Bhikkhus heard that wanderer criticizing, complaining, and spreading it about. Those bhikkhus who were of few wishes … criticized, complained, and spread it about: "How can the Venerable Upananda the Sakyan engage in buying and selling (kayavikkaya) with a wanderer?" Then those bhikkhus reported this matter to the Blessed One.
"Is it true, Upananda, that you engage in buying and selling with a wanderer?"
"It is true, Blessed One."
The Buddha, the Blessed One, rebuked him: "How can you, foolish man, engage in buying and selling with a wanderer? This, foolish man, is neither for the confidence of those without confidence nor for the increase of those with confidence …
"And thus, bhikkhus, you should recite this training rule (sikkhāpada):
"Should any bhikkhu engage in buying and selling of various kinds, it is an offense of expiation involving forfeiture (nissaggiyaṃ pācittiyaṃ)."
