[129] Now at that time a certain bhikkhu's bowl was broken. Then that bhikkhu, being scrupulous, thinking, "Asking for a bowl has been prohibited by the Blessed One," did not ask for one, but walked for alms receiving them in his hands. People looked down upon this, criticized, and spread it about, saying, "How can these ascetics, sons of the Sakyan, walk for alms receiving them in their hands, just like the sectarians?"
Bhikkhus heard those people looking down upon this, criticizing, and spreading it about. Then those bhikkhus reported this matter to the Blessed One.
Then the Blessed One, on that occasion and in that connection, having given a talk on the Dhamma, addressed the bhikkhus: "Bhikkhus, I allow a bhikkhu whose bowl has been lost or whose bowl has been broken to ask for a bowl."
