[350] **Whoever (yo pana):** whoever, of whatever sort … **Bhikkhu:** … this is the bhikkhu intended in this sense.
**Earth (pathavī):** there are two kinds of earth: genuine earth (jātā pathavī) and non-genuine earth (ajātā pathavī).
**Genuine earth** means: pure loose soil, pure clay; with few stones, few pebbles of gravel, few potsherds, little grit, little sand; mostly loose soil, mostly clay. Even when unburnt, it is called genuine earth. Also a heap of loose soil or a heap of clay that has been rained upon for more than four months — this too is called genuine earth.
**Non-genuine earth** means: pure stone, pure gravel, pure potsherds, pure grit, pure sand; with little loose soil, little clay; mostly stone, mostly gravel, mostly potsherds, mostly grit, mostly sand. Even when burnt, it is called non-genuine earth. Also a heap of loose soil or a heap of clay that has been rained upon for less than four months — this too is called non-genuine earth.
