[479] Now at that time bhikkhus were traveling on a journey (addhāna) together with people. Then those bhikkhus said to those people: "Wait a moment, friends; we shall walk for alms." They said thus: "Venerable sirs, eat right here." The bhikkhus, being scrupulous, did not accept, thinking: "A group meal (gaṇabhojana) has been prohibited by the Blessed One." They reported this matter to the Blessed One. "Bhikkhus, I allow a group meal to be eaten at a time of traveling on a journey. And thus, bhikkhus, you should recite this training rule (sikkhāpada): In the case of a group meal, except on an occasion, there is an offense of pācittiya. Herein, this is the occasion: a time of illness, a time of giving robes, a time of making robes, a time of traveling on a journey — this is the occasion here." And thus this training rule was laid down by the Blessed One for the bhikkhus.
