[611] Now at that time, in the hot season, in the season of fever, bhikkhus, out of scrupulousness, did not bathe; they slept with their limbs covered in sweat. Both the robes and the lodgings were soiled. They reported this matter to the Blessed One. "Bhikkhus, I allow bathing at intervals of less than half a month in the hot season, in the season of fever. And thus, bhikkhus, you should recite this training rule (sikkhāpada):
"Should any bhikkhu bathe at intervals of less than half a month, except on an occasion, there is an offense entailing confession (pācittiya). Herein this is the occasion: the last month and a half of the hot season and the first month of the rains — these two and a half months are the hot season, the season of fever; this is the occasion herein."
And thus this training rule was laid down by the Blessed One for the bhikkhus.
