[649] The boy Upāli heard this conversation between his mother and father. Then the boy Upāli approached those boys; and having approached, he said this to those boys: "Come, sirs, let us go forth (pabbajjā) among the ascetics, the sons of the Sakyan."
"If you, sir, will go forth, then we too will go forth."
Then those boys, each having approached his own mother and father, said this: "Permit us to go forth from the household life into homelessness."
Then the mothers and fathers of those boys, thinking, "All these boys are of one accord and of good intention," gave their permission.
They approached the bhikkhus and asked for the going forth. The bhikkhus gave them the going forth and the full ordination (upasampadā).
Rising in the time before dawn, they cried: "Give rice gruel! Give boiled rice! Give solid food!"
The bhikkhus said this: "Wait, friends, until the night grows light. If there is rice gruel, you shall drink it; if there is boiled rice, you shall eat it; if there is solid food, you shall eat it. But if there is no rice gruel, boiled rice, or solid food, then you shall eat after walking for alms."
But even when spoken to thus by the bhikkhus, those bhikkhus went on crying, "Give rice gruel! Give boiled rice! Give solid food!" — and they soiled the lodgings with excrement and with urine.
