[674] Now at that time the group-of-six bhikkhus, knowingly, coaxed over the samaṇuddesa Kaṇḍaka, who had been thus expelled, had him attend upon them, ate together with him, and even shared a sleeping place with him. Those bhikkhus who were of few wishes … they murmured, complained, and spread it about: "How can the group-of-six bhikkhus, knowingly, coax over the samaṇuddesa Kaṇḍaka, thus expelled, have him attend upon them, eat together with him, and even share a sleeping place with him?" …
"Is it true, bhikkhus, as they say, that you, knowingly, coax over the samaṇuddesa Kaṇḍaka, thus expelled, have him attend upon you, eat together with him, and even share a sleeping place with him?"
"It is true, Blessed One."
The Buddha, the Blessed One, rebuked them: "How can you, foolish men, knowingly coax over the samaṇuddesa Kaṇḍaka, thus expelled, have him attend upon you, eat together with him, and even share a sleeping place with him? This, foolish men, is not for the confidence of those without confidence, nor for the increase of those already confident …
"And thus, bhikkhus, you should recite this training rule:
"If even a samaṇuddesa should speak thus: 'In such a way do I understand the Dhamma taught by the Blessed One, that those things declared obstructive by the Blessed One are not truly able to obstruct one who indulges in them' — that samaṇuddesa should be addressed by the bhikkhus thus: 'Do not, friend samaṇuddesa, speak thus. Do not misrepresent the Blessed One; for it is not good to misrepresent the Blessed One, and the Blessed One would not speak thus. In many ways, friend samaṇuddesa, obstructive things have been declared by the Blessed One, and they are indeed able to obstruct one who indulges in them.' And if that samaṇuddesa, being spoken to thus by the bhikkhus, should persist just as before, that samaṇuddesa should be addressed by the bhikkhus thus: 'From this day forth, friend samaṇuddesa, the Blessed One is not to be cited by you as your teacher; and that which other samaṇuddesas obtain — the sharing of a sleeping place with bhikkhus for two or three nights — even that is not for you. Go, wretch¹! Be lost!' Should any bhikkhu, knowingly, coax over a samaṇuddesa thus expelled, or have him attend upon him, or eat together with him, or share a sleeping place with him, it is a pācittiya."
