[690] **"Whatever … [bhikkhu]"** means: whoever, of whatever sort … . **"Bhikkhu"** means: … this is the bhikkhu (bhikkhu) intended in this sense. **"Every half-month"** means: on each Uposatha day. **"While the Pātimokkha is being recited"** means: while it is being recited. **"Should say thus"** means: having engaged in improper conduct (anācāra), [thinking,] "Let them know that I committed it out of ignorance," while the Pātimokkha is being recited he says thus: "Only now indeed do I know that this rule too, it seems, is handed down in the sutta, included in the sutta, and comes up for recitation every half-month" — there is an offense of wrong-doing (dukkaṭa).
