[735] **"Whoever"** means: whoever, of whatever sort … **"Bhikkhu"** means: … this is the bhikkhu intended in this sense.
**"A khattiya"** means: one who is well born on both sides, on the mother's side and on the father's side, of pure conception back through seven generations of paternal forebears, unimpeached and irreproachable with respect to any talk of birth.
**"Anointed on the head" (muddhābhisitta)** means: he has been anointed with the khattiya consecration.
**"While the king has not departed"** means: the king has not departed from the sleeping chamber.
**"While the treasure has not departed"** means: the chief queen (mahesī) has not departed from the sleeping chamber; or both have not departed.
**"Without having previously announced himself"** means: not previously invited.
**"Threshold-post" (indakhīla)**: the threshold (ummāra) of the sleeping chamber is what is meant.
**"Sleeping chamber"** means: wherever the king's bed has been prepared, even if it is merely enclosed by a wall of screening cloth.
**"Should step across the threshold-post"** means: if he steps across the threshold with the first foot, there is an offense of wrong-doing (dukkaṭa); if he steps across with the second foot, there is an offense of pācittiya.
