[790] Now at that time a certain bhikkhu was a family frequenter (kulupaka) of that family. Then that bhikkhu, in the morning, having dressed and taking his bowl and robe, approached that family; having approached, he sat down on the seat that had been prepared. Now that bhikkhu was ill. Then those people said to that bhikkhu, "Eat, venerable sir." Then that bhikkhu, being scrupulous, thinking, "It has been prohibited by the Blessed One for one who is uninvited to receive with his own hand hard food or soft food among families agreed upon as trainees (sekkhasammata) and to chew or to eat it," did not accept; and he was unable to walk for alms and went without his meal. Then that bhikkhu, having gone to the monastery, informed the bhikkhus of this matter. The bhikkhus informed the Blessed One of this matter.
Then the Blessed One, on that occasion and in that connection, having given a talk on the Dhamma, addressed the bhikkhus: "Bhikkhus, I allow a bhikkhu who is ill to receive with his own hand hard food or soft food among families agreed upon as trainees, and to chew or to eat it. And thus, bhikkhus, you should recite this training rule:
'Now, whatever families are agreed upon as trainees: should any bhikkhu, not previously invited, not being ill, receive with his own hand hard food or soft food among such families agreed upon as trainees, and chew it or eat it, it is to be acknowledged by that bhikkhu: "Friend, I have fallen into a blameworthy matter, unsuitable, which ought to be acknowledged; I acknowledge it."'"
