[863] Origin at Sāvatthī. Now at that time the bhikkhus of the group of six taught the Dhamma to one with sandals on … "I shall not teach the Dhamma to one with sandals on who is not sick" — thus is the training to be undertaken.
The Dhamma is not to be taught to one with sandals on who is not sick. Whatever bhikkhu, out of disrespect, teaches the Dhamma to one who is not sick who has stepped onto [sandals], or has them bound on, or has them slipped on, commits an offence of wrong-doing (dukkaṭa).
There is no offence: if it is unintentional; if he is unmindful; if he does not know; if [the listener] is sick; in emergencies; if he is insane; if he is the first offender (ādikammika).
