[865] Origin at Sāvatthī. Now at that time the group-of-six bhikkhus taught the Dhamma to a person lying on a bed … "I will not teach the Dhamma to a person lying on a bed who is not sick" — thus is the training to be undertaken.
The Dhamma is not to be taught to a person lying on a bed who is not sick. Whatever bhikkhu, out of disrespect, teaches the Dhamma to one who is not sick and is lying down — even, at the least, on the bare ground — incurs an offense of wrong-doing (dukkaṭa).
There is no offense: if it is unintentional; if he is unmindful; if he does not know; if the person is sick; in emergencies; if he is insane; if he is the first offender.
