Vinayapiṭaka · Bhikkhu Vibhaṅga (2) · Vol. 2 · Section 98

[98] "**And should [wool] accrue to a bhikkhu who has set out on a journey by road**" (bhikkhuno paneva addhānamaggapaṭipannassa): to one going along a way. "**Sheep's wool (eḷakalomāni) should accrue**" (uppajjeyyuṃ): it may arise from the Saṅgha, or from a group, or from relatives, or from friends, or as discarded goods (paṃsukūla), or by means of his own wealth. "**If he wishes**" (ākaṅkhamānena): desiring it, he may accept it. "**Having accepted it, it may be carried with his own hands for three yojanas at most**" (paṭiggahetvā tiyojanaparamaṃ sahatthā hāretabbāni): it may be carried with his own hands for a distance of three yojanas at the most. "**When there is no one to carry it**" (asante hārake): there is no other carrier at all — whether a woman or a man, a householder or one gone forth. "**If he should carry it further than that, even when there is no one to carry it**": as he passes beyond the three yojanas with the first foot, there is an offense of wrong-doing (dukkaṭa); as he passes beyond with the second foot, [the wool] becomes subject to forfeiture (nissaggiya).⁴ Standing within the three yojanas, if he drops it beyond the three yojanas, it becomes subject to forfeiture.⁵ If, having placed it in the vehicle or among the goods of another who does not know, he causes it to pass beyond three yojanas, it becomes subject to forfeiture. It is to be forfeited to a Saṅgha, or to a group, or to an individual. "And thus, bhikkhus, should it be forfeited: … 'Venerable sirs, this sheep's wool of mine has been taken beyond three yojanas and is to be forfeited. I forfeit it to the Saṅgha.' … '… should give …' … '… should give …' … 'I give [this] to the venerable one.'" --- ¹ M(arammā, Burmese ed.): *haritabbāni*; so too below. ² M., Yu.: *panthaṃ*. ³ M., Yu.: *paṃsukūlaṃ*; so too below. ⁴–⁵ M., Yu.: *nissaggiyaṃ pācittiyaṃ*.
