[252] Bhikkhus, there are these two things (dhammā). What two? Contemplation of gratification (assādānupassitā) in things conducive to the fetters (saññojaniyā dhammā), and contemplation of disenchantment (nibbidānupassitā) in things conducive to the fetters. Bhikkhus, one who dwells contemplating gratification in things conducive to the fetters does not abandon lust (rāga), does not abandon hatred, does not abandon delusion. Not having abandoned lust, not having abandoned hatred, not having abandoned delusion, one is not freed from birth, aging, death (jāti, jarā, maraṇa), from sorrow, lamentation, pain, grief, and despair; one is not freed from suffering (dukkha), I say. Bhikkhus, one who dwells contemplating disenchantment in things conducive to the fetters abandons lust, abandons hatred, abandons delusion. Having abandoned lust, having abandoned hatred, having abandoned delusion, one is freed from birth, aging, death, from sorrow, lamentation, pain, grief, and despair; one is freed from suffering, I say. These, bhikkhus, are the two things.
