[264] Then the Venerable Ānanda approached the Blessed One; having approached, he paid homage to the Blessed One and sat down to one side. As the Venerable Ānanda was sitting to one side, the Blessed One said this to him: "Ānanda, I say categorically that bodily misconduct (kāyaduccarita), verbal misconduct (vacīduccarita), and mental misconduct (manoduccarita) ought not to be done."
"Venerable sir, when one does that which the Blessed One has declared categorically ought not to be done—bodily misconduct, verbal misconduct, and mental misconduct—what danger (ādīnava) is to be expected?"
"Ānanda, when one does that which I have declared categorically ought not to be done—bodily misconduct, verbal misconduct, and mental misconduct—this danger is to be expected: one reproaches even oneself; the wise, having investigated, censure one; a bad report of one's fame spreads abroad; one dies confused; and with the breakup of the body, after death, one is reborn in a state of loss (apāya), a bad destination, a place of ruin, hell (niraya). Ānanda, when one does that which I have declared categorically ought not to be done—bodily misconduct, verbal misconduct, and mental misconduct—this is the danger to be expected.
"Ānanda, I say categorically that bodily good conduct (kāyasucarita), verbal good conduct (vacīsucarita), and mental good conduct (manosucarita) ought to be done."
"Venerable sir, when one does that which the Blessed One has declared categorically ought to be done—bodily good conduct, verbal good conduct, and mental good conduct—what benefit (ānisaṃsa) is to be expected?"
"Ānanda, when one does that which I have declared categorically ought to be done—bodily good conduct, verbal good conduct, and mental good conduct—this benefit is to be expected: one does not reproach even oneself; the wise, having investigated, praise one; a good report of one's fame spreads abroad; one dies unconfused; and with the breakup of the body, after death, one is reborn in a good destination, a heavenly world. Ānanda, when one does that which I have declared categorically ought to be done—bodily good conduct, verbal good conduct, and mental good conduct—this is the benefit to be expected."
