[279] [33] Then a certain brahmin approached the Blessed One; having approached, he exchanged greetings with the Blessed One, and when the cordial and agreeable talk was concluded, he sat down to one side. Sitting to one side, that brahmin said to the Blessed One: "What does Master Gotama assert? What does he proclaim?"
"Brahmin, I am both one who asserts action (kiriyavādī) and one who asserts non-action (akiriyavādī)."
"But in what way is Master Gotama both one who asserts action and one who asserts non-action?"
"Brahmin, I assert the non-doing of bodily misconduct, of verbal misconduct, and of mental misconduct; I assert the non-doing of many kinds of evil, unwholesome states. And I assert, brahmin, the doing of good conduct of body, of good conduct of speech, and of good conduct of mind; I assert the doing of many kinds of wholesome states. It is in this way, brahmin, that I am both one who asserts action and one who asserts non-action."
"Excellent, Master Gotama! … Let Master Gotama remember me as a lay follower who has gone for refuge for life from this day forth."
