[441] 2. Bhikkhus, the fool (bāla) is characterized by his action (kamma); the wise man (paṇḍita) is characterized by his action; wisdom (paññā) shines forth in conduct (apadāna).
Bhikkhus, one possessing three qualities should be known as a fool. What three? Misconduct by body (kāyaduccarita), misconduct by speech (vacīduccarita), and misconduct by mind (manoduccarita). One possessing these three qualities, bhikkhus, should be known as a fool.
Bhikkhus, one possessing three qualities should be known as a wise man. What three? Good conduct by body (kāyasucarita), good conduct by speech (vacīsucarita), and good conduct by mind (manosucarita). One possessing these three qualities, bhikkhus, should be known as a wise man.
Therefore, bhikkhus, you should train yourselves thus: "We shall thoroughly avoid those three qualities, possessing which one should be known as a fool; and we shall undertake and live by those three qualities, possessing which one should be known as a wise man." Thus indeed, bhikkhus, should you train yourselves.
