[529] "Bhikkhus, there are these three trainings (sikkhā). What three? The training in higher morality (adhisīla-sikkhā), the training in higher mentality (adhicitta-sikkhā), and the training in higher wisdom (adhipaññā-sikkhā).
And what, bhikkhus, is the training in higher morality? Here, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu is virtuous … he trains in the training rules (sikkhāpada), having undertaken them. This, bhikkhus, is called the training in higher morality.
And what, bhikkhus, is the training in higher mentality? Here, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu, quite secluded from sensual pleasures … enters and dwells in the fourth jhāna. This, bhikkhus, is called the training in higher mentality.
And what, bhikkhus, is the training in higher wisdom? Here, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu understands as it really is (yathābhūta): 'This is suffering (dukkha)' … he understands as it really is: 'This is the way of practice leading to the cessation of suffering.' This, bhikkhus, is called the training in higher wisdom.
These, bhikkhus, are the three trainings."
