[116] Bhikkhus, heedfulness (appamāda) should be practiced in regard to four grounds. Which four? Bhikkhus, abandon bodily misconduct (kāyaduccarita), develop good bodily conduct (kāyasucarita), and do not be heedless therein. Abandon verbal misconduct (vacīduccarita), develop good verbal conduct (vacīsucarita), and do not be heedless therein. Abandon mental misconduct (manoduccarita), develop good mental conduct (manosucarita), and do not be heedless therein. Abandon wrong view (micchādiṭṭhi), develop right view (sammādiṭṭhi), and do not be heedless therein.
Bhikkhus, when a bhikkhu's bodily misconduct has been abandoned and good bodily conduct developed, when verbal misconduct has been abandoned and good verbal conduct developed, when mental misconduct has been abandoned and good mental conduct developed, when wrong view has been abandoned and right view developed, he does not fear death (maraṇa) in the life to come.
