[13] "Bhikkhus, there are these four right strivings (sammappadhāna). What four? Here, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu generates zeal (chanda), endeavors, arouses energy, exerts his mind (citta), and strives for the non-arising of evil, unwholesome states that have not yet arisen. He generates zeal, endeavors, arouses energy, exerts his mind, and strives for the abandoning of evil, unwholesome states that have arisen. He generates zeal, endeavors, arouses energy, exerts his mind, and strives for the arising of wholesome states that have not yet arisen. He generates zeal, endeavors, arouses energy, exerts his mind, and strives for the persistence, non-confusion, increase, abundance, development, and fulfillment of wholesome states that have arisen. These, bhikkhus, are the four right strivings."
Those who rightly strive have overcome Māra's domain;
they, unattached, have gone beyond the fear of birth and death;
they, contented, having conquered Māra together with his mount,
they, unstirred, have transcended (all) Namuci's power (they are happy).
