[156] Bhikkhus, there are these four incalculables (asaṅkheyya) of an eon (kappa). What four? Bhikkhus, when an eon is contracting (saṃvaṭṭa), it is not easy to reckon it as: 'so many years,' or 'so many hundreds of years,' or 'so many thousands of years,' or 'so many hundreds of thousands of years.' Bhikkhus, when an eon remains in a state of contraction (saṃvaṭṭaṭṭhāyī), it is not easy to reckon it as: 'so many years,' or 'so many hundreds of years,' or 'so many thousands of years,' or 'so many hundreds of thousands of years.' Bhikkhus, when an eon is expanding (vivaṭṭa), it is not easy to reckon it as: 'so many years,' or 'so many hundreds of years,' or 'so many thousands of years,' or 'so many hundreds of thousands of years.' Bhikkhus, when an eon remains in a state of expansion (vivaṭṭaṭṭhāyī), it is not easy to reckon it as: 'so many years,' or 'so many hundreds of years,' or 'so many thousands of years,' or 'so many hundreds of thousands of years.' These, bhikkhus, are the four incalculables of an eon.
