[233] Bhikkhus, these four kinds of kamma have been proclaimed by me after I realized them for myself with direct knowledge (abhiññā). What four? There is, bhikkhus, dark kamma with dark result (vipāka); there is, bhikkhus, bright kamma with bright result; there is, bhikkhus, kamma that is dark-and-bright with dark-and-bright result; there is, bhikkhus, kamma that is neither dark nor bright, with result neither dark nor bright, which leads to the destruction of kamma. And what, bhikkhus, is dark kamma with dark result? Here, bhikkhus, someone generates an afflictive bodily formation (kāyasaṅkhāra), generates an afflictive verbal formation, generates an afflictive mental formation. Having generated an afflictive bodily formation, having generated an afflictive verbal formation, having generated an afflictive mental formation, he is reborn in an afflictive world. When he has been reborn in an afflictive world, afflictive contacts (phassa) touch him. Being touched by afflictive contacts, he experiences an afflictive feeling (vedanā), exclusively painful, as in the case of beings in hell. This, bhikkhus, is called dark kamma with dark result. And what, bhikkhus, is bright kamma with bright result? Here, bhikkhus, someone generates a non-afflictive bodily formation, generates a non-afflictive verbal formation, generates a non-afflictive mental formation. Having generated a non-afflictive bodily formation, having generated a non-afflictive verbal formation, having generated a non-afflictive mental formation, he is reborn in a non-afflictive world. When he has been reborn in a non-afflictive world, non-afflictive contacts touch him. Being touched by non-afflictive contacts, he experiences a non-afflictive feeling, exclusively pleasant, as in the case of the Subhakiṇha devas. This, bhikkhus, is called bright kamma with bright result. And what, bhikkhus, is kamma that is dark-and-bright with dark-and-bright result? Here, bhikkhus, someone generates a bodily formation that is both afflictive and non-afflictive, generates a verbal formation that is both afflictive and non-afflictive, generates a mental formation that is both afflictive and non-afflictive. Having generated a bodily formation that is both afflictive and non-afflictive, having generated a verbal formation that is both afflictive and non-afflictive, having generated a mental formation that is both afflictive and non-afflictive, he is reborn in a world that is both afflictive and non-afflictive. When he has been reborn in a world that is both afflictive and non-afflictive, contacts both afflictive and non-afflictive touch him. Being touched by contacts both afflictive and non-afflictive, he experiences a feeling that is both afflictive and non-afflictive, mingled pleasure and pain, as in the case of human beings, some devas, and some beings in the lower realms (vinipātika). This, bhikkhus, is called kamma that is dark-and-bright with dark-and-bright result. And what, bhikkhus, is kamma that is neither dark nor bright, with result neither dark nor bright, which leads to the destruction of kamma? Herein, bhikkhus, the volition (cetanā) for the abandoning of that kamma which is dark with dark result; the volition for the abandoning of that kamma which is bright with bright result; the volition for the abandoning of that kamma which is dark-and-bright with dark-and-bright result: this, bhikkhus, is called kamma that is neither dark nor bright, with result neither dark nor bright, which leads to the destruction of kamma. These, bhikkhus, are the four kinds of kamma proclaimed by me after I realized them for myself with direct knowledge.
