[274] Bhikkhus, for the direct knowledge (abhiññā) of lust (rāga), four dhammas should be developed. What four? Here, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu dwells contemplating the body in the body, ardent, clearly comprehending, mindful, having removed covetousness and grief regarding the world; … in feelings (vedanā) … in the mind (citta) … he dwells contemplating dhammas in dhammas, ardent, clearly comprehending, mindful, having removed covetousness and grief regarding the world. Bhikkhus, for the direct knowledge of lust, these four dhammas should be developed. Bhikkhus, for the direct knowledge of lust, four dhammas should be developed. What four? Here, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu generates desire (chanda), strives, arouses energy, exerts his mind, and endeavours for the non-arising of unarisen evil, unwholesome dhammas; … for the abandoning of arisen evil, unwholesome dhammas … for the arising of unarisen wholesome dhammas … he generates desire, strives, arouses energy, exerts his mind, and endeavours for the persistence, non-confusion, increase, abundance, development, and fulfilment of arisen wholesome dhammas. Bhikkhus, for the direct knowledge of lust, these four dhammas should be developed. Bhikkhus, for the direct knowledge of lust, four dhammas should be developed. What four? Here, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu develops the basis of spiritual power (iddhipāda) possessed of concentration (samādhi) due to desire and volitional formations of striving; … concentration due to energy … concentration due to mind … he develops the basis of spiritual power possessed of concentration due to investigation (vīmaṃsā) and volitional formations of striving. Bhikkhus, for the direct knowledge of lust, these four dhammas should be developed. Bhikkhus, for the full understanding (pariññā) of lust … for its utter destruction, for its abandoning, for its destruction, for its vanishing, for dispassion towards it, for its cessation, for its giving up, for its relinquishment, these four dhammas should be developed. For the direct knowledge, full understanding, utter destruction, abandoning, destruction, vanishing, dispassion, cessation, giving up, and relinquishment of hatred (dosa), of delusion (moha), of anger (kodha), of hostility (upanāha), of denigration (makkha), of domineering rivalry (paḷāsa), of envy (issā), of miserliness (macchariya), of deceit (māyā), of craftiness (sāṭheyya), of obstinacy (thambha), of presumption (sārambha), of conceit (māna), of arrogance (atimāna), of vanity (mada), and of heedlessness (pamāda), these four dhammas should be developed.
