[39] Then Ujjaya the brahmin approached the Blessed One; having approached, he exchanged greetings with the Blessed One, and when the courteous and memorable talk was concluded, he sat down to one side. Sitting to one side, Ujjaya the brahmin said this to the Blessed One: "Does Master Gotama, too, praise sacrifice?"
"Brahmin, I do not praise every sacrifice; yet neither, brahmin, do I withhold praise from every sacrifice. In whatever sacrifice, brahmin, cattle are slain, goats and sheep are slain, chickens and pigs are slain, and various creatures come to slaughter — such a sacrifice, brahmin, involving violence (sārambha), I do not praise. For what reason? Because, brahmin, arahants, and those who have entered upon the path to arahantship, do not attend such a sacrifice involving violence. But in whatever sacrifice, brahmin, no cattle are slain, no goats and sheep are slain, no chickens and pigs are slain, and no various creatures come to slaughter — such a sacrifice, brahmin, free from violence (nirārambha), I do praise: that is, a regular gift (niccadāna), a sacrifice offered by family custom (anukulayañña). For what reason? Because, brahmin, arahants, and those who have entered upon the path to arahantship, do attend such a sacrifice free from violence.
The horse sacrifice (assamedha), the human sacrifice (purisamedha),
the sammāpāsa, the vājapeyya, the niraggaḷa —
these great sacrifices of great violence
do not bear great fruit.
Where goats and sheep and cattle
and various creatures are slain,
the great seers who fare rightly
do not attend that sacrifice.
But whatever sacrifice, free from violence,
people offer regularly by family custom,
where no goats and sheep and cattle
and various creatures are slain —
that sacrifice the great seers
who fare rightly do attend.
Thus should the wise person sacrifice:
this sacrifice bears great fruit.
For one who sacrifices thus
it is better, not worse;
the sacrifice becomes abundant,
and the deities are pleased."
