[48] On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling at Sāvatthī, in Jeta's Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika's monastery. Now on that occasion the Venerable Visākha Pañcāliputta was instructing, urging, rousing, and gladdening the bhikkhus in the assembly hall with a talk on the Dhamma, delivered in urbane speech — fluent, faultless, making the meaning clear, comprehensive, and independent.
Then the Blessed One, having emerged from seclusion in the evening, approached the assembly hall; having approached, he sat down on the seat prepared for him. Having sat down, the Blessed One addressed the bhikkhus: "Bhikkhus, who has been instructing, urging, rousing, and gladdening the bhikkhus in the assembly hall with a talk on the Dhamma, delivered in urbane speech — fluent, faultless, making the meaning clear, comprehensive, and independent?"
"Venerable sir, it was the Venerable Visākha Pañcāliputta who was instructing, urging, rousing, and gladdening the bhikkhus in the assembly hall with a talk on the Dhamma, delivered in urbane speech — fluent, faultless, making the meaning clear, comprehensive, and independent."
Then the Blessed One said this to the Venerable Visākha Pañcāliputta: "Good, good, Visākha! It is good, Visākha, that you instruct, urge, rouse, and gladden the bhikkhus with a talk on the Dhamma, delivered in urbane speech — fluent, faultless, making the meaning clear, comprehensive, and independent.
When he does not speak, they do not know him —
a wise man mingled among fools;
but when he speaks, they know him
as one who teaches the deathless state (amataṃ padaṃ).
Let him speak forth and illuminate the Dhamma;
let him raise aloft the banner of the seers.
Well-spoken words are the banner of the seers,
for the Dhamma is the banner of the seers."
