[50] Bhikkhus, there are these four corruptions (upakkilesā) of the moon and sun, corrupted by which the moon and sun do not glow, do not shine, do not radiate. What four?
Clouds, bhikkhus, are a corruption of the moon and sun, corrupted by which corruption the moon and sun do not glow, do not shine, do not radiate. Fog, bhikkhus, is a corruption of the moon and sun, corrupted by which corruption the moon and sun do not glow, do not shine, do not radiate. Smoke and dust, bhikkhus, are a corruption of the moon and sun, corrupted by which corruption the moon and sun do not glow, do not shine, do not radiate. Rāhu, lord of the asuras, bhikkhus, is a corruption of the moon and sun, corrupted by which corruption the moon and sun do not glow, do not shine, do not radiate. These, bhikkhus, are the four corruptions of the moon and sun, corrupted by which corruptions the moon and sun do not glow, do not shine, do not radiate.
Just so, bhikkhus, there are four corruptions of ascetics and brahmins, corrupted by which corruptions some ascetics and brahmins do not glow, do not shine, do not radiate. What four?
There are, bhikkhus, some ascetics and brahmins who drink liquor and fermented drink, who do not abstain from drinking liquor and fermented drink. This, bhikkhus, is the first corruption of ascetics and brahmins, corrupted by which corruption some ascetics and brahmins do not glow, do not shine, do not radiate.
There are, bhikkhus, some ascetics and brahmins who engage in sexual intercourse, who do not abstain from sexual intercourse. This, bhikkhus, is the second corruption of ascetics and brahmins, corrupted by which corruption some ascetics and brahmins do not glow, do not shine, do not radiate.
There are, bhikkhus, some ascetics and brahmins who consent to gold and silver, who do not abstain from accepting gold and silver. This, bhikkhus, is the third corruption of ascetics and brahmins, corrupted by which corruption some ascetics and brahmins do not glow, do not shine, do not radiate.
There are, bhikkhus, some ascetics and brahmins who make their living by wrong livelihood, who do not abstain from wrong livelihood. This, bhikkhus, is the fourth corruption of ascetics and brahmins, corrupted by which corruption some ascetics and brahmins do not glow, do not shine, do not radiate.
These, bhikkhus, are the four corruptions of ascetics and brahmins, corrupted by which corruptions some ascetics and brahmins do not glow, do not shine, do not radiate.
Defiled by lust and hatred,
some ascetics and brahmins,
persons shrouded by ignorance (avijjā),
delighting in pleasing forms,
drink liquor and fermented drink,
engage in sexual intercourse;
unwise, they consent
to silver and gold.
Some ascetics and brahmins
live by wrong livelihood.
These have been declared corruptions
by the Buddha, Kinsman of the Sun—
corruptions corrupted by which
some ascetics and brahmins
do not glow, do not shine:
impure and dust-covered are they reckoned.
Enveloped by darkness,
slaves of craving (taṇhā), led by its cord,
they swell the terrible charnel ground;
they take up renewed existence.
