[7] Bhikkhus, these four who are competent, well disciplined, confident, learned, bearers of the Dhamma, practising in accordance with the Dhamma, adorn the Saṅgha. Which four? Here, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu who is competent, well disciplined, confident, learned, a bearer of the Dhamma, practising in accordance with the Dhamma, adorns the Saṅgha. A bhikkhunī, bhikkhus, … A lay follower (upāsaka), bhikkhus, … A laywoman follower (upāsikā), bhikkhus, who is competent, well disciplined, confident, learned, a bearer of the Dhamma, practising in accordance with the Dhamma, adorns the Saṅgha. These, bhikkhus, are the four who, being competent, well disciplined, confident, learned, bearers of the Dhamma, practising in accordance with the Dhamma, adorn the Saṅgha.
One who is competent and confident,
who is learned and a bearer of the Dhamma,
who lives in conformity with the Dhamma —
such a one is called an adorner of the Saṅgha.
A bhikkhu accomplished in virtue, a bhikkhunī who is learned,
a lay follower who has faith, and a laywoman follower who has faith —
these indeed adorn the Saṅgha; these truly are adorners of the Saṅgha.
