[78] Bhikkhus, there are these four purifications of offerings (dakkhiṇāvisuddhi). What four? There is, bhikkhus, an offering (dakkhiṇā) that is purified on the part of the donor (dāyaka), not on the part of the recipient (paṭiggāhaka). There is, bhikkhus, an offering that is purified on the part of the recipient, not on the part of the donor. There is, bhikkhus, an offering that is purified neither on the part of the donor nor on the part of the recipient. There is, bhikkhus, an offering that is purified both on the part of the donor and on the part of the recipient.
And how, bhikkhus, is an offering purified on the part of the donor, not on the part of the recipient? Here, bhikkhus, the donor is virtuous, of good character, while the recipient is immoral, of evil character. Thus indeed, bhikkhus, an offering is purified on the part of the donor, not on the part of the recipient.
And how, bhikkhus, is an offering purified on the part of the recipient, not on the part of the donor? Here, bhikkhus, the donor is immoral, of evil character, while the recipient is virtuous, of good character. Thus indeed, bhikkhus, an offering is purified on the part of the recipient, not on the part of the donor.
And how, bhikkhus, is an offering purified neither on the part of the donor nor on the part of the recipient? Here, bhikkhus, the donor is immoral, of evil character, and the recipient too is immoral, of evil character. Thus indeed, bhikkhus, an offering is purified neither on the part of the donor nor on the part of the recipient.
And how, bhikkhus, is an offering purified both on the part of the donor and on the part of the recipient? Here, bhikkhus, the donor is virtuous, of good character, and the recipient too is virtuous, of good character. Thus indeed, bhikkhus, an offering is purified both on the part of the donor and on the part of the recipient.
These, bhikkhus, are the four purifications of offerings.
