[93] Bhikkhus, these four persons are found existing in the world. Which four? Here, bhikkhus, a certain person is a gainer of internal serenity of mind (ajjhattaṃ cetosamatha) but not a gainer of insight into dhammas through higher wisdom (adhipaññādhammavipassanā). Here again, bhikkhus, a certain person is a gainer of insight into dhammas through higher wisdom but not a gainer of internal serenity of mind. Here again, bhikkhus, a certain person is neither a gainer of internal serenity of mind nor a gainer of insight into dhammas through higher wisdom. Here again, bhikkhus, a certain person is both a gainer of internal serenity of mind and a gainer of insight into dhammas through higher wisdom.
Therein, bhikkhus, the person who is a gainer of internal serenity of mind but not a gainer of insight into dhammas through higher wisdom — that person, bhikkhus, having become established in internal serenity of mind, should make an effort for insight into dhammas through higher wisdom. At a later time he becomes both a gainer of internal serenity of mind and a gainer of insight into dhammas through higher wisdom.
Therein, bhikkhus, the person who is a gainer of insight into dhammas through higher wisdom but not a gainer of internal serenity of mind — that person, bhikkhus, having become established in insight into dhammas through higher wisdom, should make an effort for internal serenity of mind. At a later time he becomes both a gainer of insight into dhammas through higher wisdom and a gainer of internal serenity of mind.
Therein, bhikkhus, the person who is neither a gainer of internal serenity of mind nor a gainer of insight into dhammas through higher wisdom — that person, bhikkhus, should exercise extraordinary desire, effort, zeal, exertion, unflagging perseverance, mindfulness, and clear comprehension for the obtaining of those very wholesome dhammas. Just as, bhikkhus, one whose clothes were ablaze or whose head were ablaze would exercise extraordinary desire, effort, zeal, exertion, unflagging perseverance, mindfulness, and clear comprehension for the extinguishing of that very fire on his clothes or head — even so, bhikkhus, that person should exercise extraordinary desire, effort, zeal, exertion, unflagging perseverance, mindfulness, and clear comprehension for the obtaining of those very wholesome dhammas. At a later time he becomes both a gainer of internal serenity of mind and a gainer of insight into dhammas through higher wisdom.
Therein, bhikkhus, the person who is both a gainer of internal serenity of mind and a gainer of insight into dhammas through higher wisdom — that person, bhikkhus, having become established in those very wholesome dhammas, should make a further effort for the destruction of the taints (āsava).
These, indeed, bhikkhus, are the four persons found existing in the world.
