[105] Bhikkhus, there are these five dwellings at ease (phāsuvihāra). What five? Here, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu maintains bodily action (kāyakamma) of loving-kindness (mettā) toward his fellows in the holy life (sabrahmacārī), both openly and in private; he maintains verbal action (vacīkamma) of loving-kindness toward his fellows in the holy life, both openly and in private; he maintains mental action (manokamma) of loving-kindness toward his fellows in the holy life, both openly and in private; and as to those virtues (sīla) that are unbroken, untorn, unblemished, unmottled, liberating, praised by the wise, ungrasped, conducive to concentration (samādhi) — he dwells possessed of virtue in common with such virtues together with his fellows in the holy life, both openly and in private; and as to that view (diṭṭhi) which is noble and emancipating, which leads the one who practices in accordance with it to the complete destruction of suffering (dukkha) — he dwells possessed of view in common with such a view together with his fellows in the holy life, both openly and in private. These, bhikkhus, are the five dwellings at ease.
