[231] Bhikkhus, a resident bhikkhu (āvāsika) possessed of five qualities is not worthy of esteem (abhāvanīya). Of what five? He is not accomplished in deportment (ākappa) nor accomplished in duties (vatta); he is not learned (bahussuta) nor one who retains what he has heard; he is not devoted to effacement (paṭisallekhitā) nor one who delights in seclusion (paṭisallāna), nor one who delights in the good (kalyāṇārāma); he is not of lovely speech nor lovely in his manner of speaking; he is unwise, dull, and stupid. Bhikkhus, a resident bhikkhu possessed of these five qualities is not worthy of esteem.
