[257] Bhikkhus, without having abandoned five dhammas, one is incapable of realizing the second jhāna ... the third jhāna ... the fourth jhāna ... the fruition of stream-entry (sotāpattiphala) ... the fruition of once-returning (sakadāgāmiphala) ... the fruition of non-returning (anāgāmiphala) ... arahantship (arahatta). What five? Stinginess as to dwelling (āvāsamacchariya), stinginess as to family (kulamacchariya), stinginess as to gain (lābhamacchariya), stinginess as to praise (vaṇṇamacchariya), and stinginess as to the Dhamma (dhammamacchariya). Bhikkhus, without having abandoned these five dhammas, one is incapable of realizing arahantship.
Bhikkhus, having abandoned five dhammas, one is capable of realizing arahantship. What five? Stinginess as to dwelling, stinginess as to family, stinginess as to gain, stinginess as to praise, and stinginess as to the Dhamma. Bhikkhus, having abandoned these five dhammas, one is capable of realizing arahantship.
