[319] [48] Then a certain brahmin approached the Blessed One; having approached, he exchanged greetings with the Blessed One, and when the courteous and memorable talk was concluded, he sat down to one side. Sitting to one side, that brahmin said this to the Blessed One: "'A Dhamma visible here and now (sandiṭṭhiko dhammo), a Dhamma visible here and now,' it is said, Master Gotama. In what way, Master Gotama, is the Dhamma visible here and now, immediate (akāliko), inviting one to come and see (ehipassiko), onward-leading (opanayiko), to be personally experienced by the wise (paccattaṃ veditabbo viññūhi)?"
"Well then, brahmin, I shall question you in return about this; answer as seems fit to you. What do you think, brahmin: when lust (rāga) is present within you, do you know, 'There is lust within me,' and when lust is absent within you, do you know, 'There is no lust within me'?"
"Even so, Master Gotama."
"Since, brahmin, when lust is present within you, you know, 'There is lust within me,' and when lust is absent within you, you know, 'There is no lust within me' — in this way too, brahmin, the Dhamma is visible here and now. … What do you think, brahmin: when hatred (dosa) is present within … when delusion (moha) is present within … when a corrupting fault of body (kāyasandosa) is present within … when a corrupting fault of speech (vacīsandosa) is present within … when a corrupting fault of mind (manosandosa) is present within you, do you know, 'There is a corrupting fault of mind within me,' and when a corrupting fault of mind is absent within you, do you know, 'There is no corrupting fault of mind within me'?"
"Even so, Master Gotama."
"Since, brahmin, when a corrupting fault of mind is present within you, you know, 'There is a corrupting fault of mind within me,' and when a corrupting fault of mind is absent within you, you know, 'There is no corrupting fault of mind within me' — in this way too, brahmin, the Dhamma is visible here and now, immediate, inviting one to come and see, onward-leading, to be personally experienced by the wise."
"Excellent, Master Gotama! Excellent, Master Gotama! … Let Master Gotama remember me as a lay follower (upāsaka) who has gone for refuge for life, from this day forward."
