[47] Bhikkhus, there are these five kinds of wealth. What five? The wealth of faith (saddhā), the wealth of virtue (sīla), the wealth of learning (suta), the wealth of generosity (cāga), and the wealth of wisdom (paññā).
And what, bhikkhus, is the wealth of faith? Here, bhikkhus, a noble disciple (ariyasāvaka) has faith; he has faith in the awakening of the Tathāgata thus: 'That Blessed One is … the teacher of devas and humans, the Buddha, the Blessed One.' This, bhikkhus, is called the wealth of faith.
And what, bhikkhus, is the wealth of virtue? Here, bhikkhus, a noble disciple abstains from the destruction of life … abstains from intoxicants causing heedlessness. This, bhikkhus, is called the wealth of virtue.
And what, bhikkhus, is the wealth of learning? Here, bhikkhus, a noble disciple is of great learning … well penetrated by view. This, bhikkhus, is called the wealth of learning.
And what, bhikkhus, is the wealth of generosity? Here, bhikkhus, a noble disciple dwells at home with a mind free from the stain of stinginess, freely generous, open-handed, delighting in relinquishment, devoted to charity, delighting in giving and sharing. This, bhikkhus, is called the wealth of generosity.
And what, bhikkhus, is the wealth of wisdom? Here, bhikkhus, a noble disciple is wise; he possesses the wisdom that discerns arising and passing away, which is noble and penetrative, leading rightly to the complete destruction of suffering (dukkha). This, bhikkhus, is called the wealth of wisdom.
These, bhikkhus, are the five kinds of wealth.
One whose faith in the Tathāgata
is unshaken and well established,
and whose virtue is good,
dear to the noble ones and praised;
one who has confidence in the Saṅgha
and vision that has become straight—
of him they say, 'He is not poor;
his life is not lived in vain.'
Therefore a wise person,
remembering the teaching of the Buddhas,
should devote himself to faith and virtue,
to confidence and the vision of the Dhamma.
