[49] At one time the Blessed One was dwelling at Sāvatthī, in Jeta's Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika's park. Then King Pasenadi of Kosala approached the Blessed One; having approached and paid homage to the Blessed One, he sat down to one side. Now on that occasion Queen Mallikā had died. Then a certain man approached King Pasenadi of Kosala; having approached, he announced into the ear of King Pasenadi of Kosala: "Sire, Queen Mallikā has died." When this was said, King Pasenadi of Kosala sat there pained and dejected, his shoulders drooping, his face downcast, brooding, at a loss for words. Then the Blessed One, knowing that King Pasenadi of Kosala was pained and dejected, his shoulders drooping, his face downcast, brooding, at a loss for words, said this to King Pasenadi of Kosala: "Great king, there are these five states that cannot be obtained (alabbhanīyāni ṭhānāni) by an ascetic, or a brahmin, or a deva, or Māra, or Brahmā, or by anyone in the world. What five? 'May what is subject to aging not age' — this is a state that cannot be obtained … not by sorrowing, not by lamenting … 'The deed is done and firm; what can I do about it now?'"
